Adult Faith Formation

Notre Dame Parish offers a wide range of adult education and enrichment opportunities under the direction of Pastoral Associate, Dr. Douglas Muir, EdD and a committee of dedicated parishioners. There is truly something for everyone in these programs.  Come and enjoy a morning, evening, a weekly series, or possibly a day. You will be glad you did!

The Church wisely and repeatedly insists that adult faith formation is essential to who we are and what we do as Church and must be situated, not at the periphery of the Church´s education mission, but at its center." - Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, US Catholic Bishops

Adult Bible Study

Our parish Bible Study meets on Mondays from September through November, and from January through March. For your convenience, two sessions are offered - afternoon and evening. Please check the bulletin for information on the current program offering.

Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet

The Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet is a 4-year program to study every book of the Bible. This is one of the best Catholic Bible studies ever developed for learning about Scripture in a systematic way, the Catholic Biblical School program.

If you’d like to study the Bible as a whole and in its parts from a Catholic point of view, with an experienced instructor, and within a Catholic faith community, the Biblical Institute is for you!

All you need is a commitment to learning and a desire for deeper understanding of God’s word.

Notre Dame hosts the biblical Institute on Wednesdays from 7-9pm from September to May.  For more information about the Biblical Institute, visit www.dioceseofjoliet.org/reo/biblicalinstitutedoj.asp

Book Discussion Group

Everyone is welcome! The purpose of the Book Discussion Group is to increase our awareness, help us to grow in our faith and in our spirituality. Discussions of the books provide an open, non-threatening forum to discuss our faith in today’s world.

Even if you don't have time to read the book, we encourage you to attend and join in the discussion. Watch the bulletin for information regarding the current book.

Enrichment Programs

Throughout the year, and during church liturgical seasons, special programs are offered.  Please visit this website or watch the bulletin for future information about upcoming enrichment events.

Marriage Preparation/Enrichment

Sponsor couples meet with an engaged couple to discuss such issues as communication, role expectations, intimacy, and faith. Sessions take place in the home of the sponsor couple at a time convenient to both couples. In addition, Marriage Enrichment programs are held throughout the year to strengthen and enhance the sacred bonds of matrimony.

Mission Trip

Notre Dame has opened its annual Mission Trip to adults who are interested in spending a week in Jamaica helping to build housing for the poor. The week long mission trip is usually scheduled in June.  For more information, please contact Dr. Doug Muir at dmuir@notredameparish.org.

Parish Library

The library is located in the foyer across from the Parish Receptions Desk. The library consists of materials on a variety of faith formation topics for adults and young people. Materials can be checked out and returned on an honor system.  Or visit: www.librarything.com/catalog/notredamechurch

Parish Mission

The Parish Mission, held annually, explores in depth, over three consecutive evenings, a topic vital to our faith and to our lives as Disciples of Christ.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The R.C.I.A. is the process by which a person enters the Catholic faith. The process includes preparation for and the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

  • R.C.I.A. is for - Those who are not baptized
  • Those who are baptized in another Christian tradition and who seek to enter Full Communion with the Catholic Church
  • Baptized Catholic who never had the opportunity to receive holy Communion and Confirmation.
  • Those who seek to join the Catholic Church become members of the Catechumenate: an ongoing process that meets people where they are on their faith journey and gently initiates them into the life of the parish and the Catholic Church.

Catechumens and candidates experience the weekend Liturgies with a small community of teachers, sponsors and others on the journey.  They study the Sunday readings together, “Breaking Open God’s Word”.  Seekers also attend teach and faith-sharing sessions with Catechists (teachers of Catholic tradition) from the parish who have been prepared to teach.

Notre Dame Catechumenate is a year-round process.  One’s readiness in the conversion process determines the actual time of reception in the Catholic Church within a community celebration.

ADULT CONFIRMATION PREPARATION: Adults 19 years and older who have not been confirmed attend a series of classes offered during the Easter Season from the Second Sunday of Easter through the Seventh Sunday of Easter after Mass on Sundays.  Confirmation is celebrated at St. Raymond Cathedral in Joliet on Pentecost.

CHILDREN and YOUTH: Children, youth and teens who are not baptized or who are out of ordinary time in sacrament preparation are incorporated into the parish RCIA process through the Religious Education Programs for children and youth.

If you are interested in learning about the Catholic faith, you are welcome to begin a journey of exploration and faith with the people of Notre Dame. For information contact Dr. Douglas Muir, EdD, 630-601-1764 - dmuir@notredameparish.org.

Parish members are invited to be sponsors.  It is a wonderful way to renew one’s knowledge of the Catholic faith.  Sponsors attend the RCIA sessions from September through Easter.
