The Notre Dame School family had been "getting ready" for author
Patricia Polacco's visit for 5 months.  The "getting ready" began this
summer, when all the grades read one or two of Polacco's 76 picture books.
It continued with teachers reading many more of her stories in read-aloud
sessions, while students checked more of her books out of the school library
by the armload.  Yes, everyone enjoyed the "getting ready" part.
But, nothing could have fully prepared us for the magical visit of Patricia Polacco
herself.  Not only did she read Pink and Say and told us the stories of Meteor! and
The Keeping Quilt, but she also transported us to places she writes about,
introduced us to generations of her family, and shared her painful growing-up years
as a special child who didn't read until the age of 14.  Patricia Polacco is truly
an everyperson, and inspired the future before her to be kinder to the people
of the world than generations past.  All agree that Mrs. Patricia Polacco's
visit made all the "getting ready" parts worth it!
